How to keep your house odor-free with cats around

Maybe you went to someone’s house and immediately could tell if they own a cat 🐈 – is that smell of urine that sometimes gives them away.

Ever wondered if you own one of those houses? Maybe you’ve become paranoid and wonder what if people can smell that you have a cat.

Health benefits and cuddly snuggles aside, cats have the ability to create all kinds of messes and odors in our homes.

If we talk about the litterbox, we all know that cats tend to carry on their paws all kinds of residues after using it and they can make a mess while and after going to the litterbox.

But that’s not the only way a cat produces all kinds of smells. Let’s talk about body smells – they can emit bad odor from their mouth, from their anal glands or from their fur.

Another reason for bad smell can be the vomit – cats have a various number of reasons to vomit – and depending on the cause, the smell can vary also.

What can you do to keep your house odor-free?

Keep the litterbox and the area around it clean

Probably the biggest source of mess, the litterbox can be the alarm that lets people know you own a cat 😊. Keep in mind, you have to assure your cats with big enough litter boxes – and at least one per cat.

So, clean the box as needed. There are solutions if you want to prevent the litter from being on your floors – you can use a kind of carpet in front of the box so that when your cat gets out, steps on it and leaves there all the residues. There are plenty of such products on the market for you to choose from.

More recently some new products appeared on the market: there are now litter robots that will do the scooping for you.

Clean up as fast as you can after an accident happens

When you own a pet, you never know what you’ll find when you get home – it might be poop, urine, vomit on your floor (hihi). It’s very important that you clean up all these smelly things as soon as you observe them.

Brush your cat’s fur

When talking about cats, we think about them as being clean. That’s not the case for all of them- maybe they are just lazy or maybe they have way too much fur and just get tired of cleaning it all day long. You can help your cat by brushing their fur regularly – it’s very important to give your cat time to get used to being brushed- it’s best if you start doing it at an early age.

Vacuum your house to get rid of your cat’s hair

Cats can shed a loooot – especially long-coated cats. Besides brushing your cat, vacuuming your house often is the next best way to combat the hair and dander. Be sure you choose a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
